There ist no doubt that George Soulie de Morant has been the father of modern western acupuncture.
However, it seems quite doubtful how much he really knew about Chinese medicine and acupuncture when he left China.
That he really was considered a "Chinese Doctor" by the Chinese seems to be only a fairy tale. It seems quite suspicious that he, who willingly told the names of all the doctors cooperating with him in France, never mentions the names of the most important persons in his medical career - the Chinese doctors who taught him acupuncture and let him treat some of their patienst.
And if in fact he had treated patients in China, it is hard to understand that in all his writings he never gives any hint about one of them, and how he treated them. Moreover, if he really knew a lot about Chinese medicine at the time of late Qing dynasty and early republic, it ist hard to believe how he came to the conclusion that "acupuncture was the most importeant part of Chinese medicine" (as he wrote on several occasions).
Comparing his earlier writings about acupuncture with his later ones gives the impression that he only had some basic knowledge about this subject when he left China and became something like an expert only by studying Chinese medical literature after 1928.

Preparing a book about this fascinating personality, I am looking for experts having done research about him before. - Please excuse my lack of ability to write in French!

H.-J. Lehmann, Berlin
